'Maintenance' worker enters tenant's apartment past midnight, leaves mysteriously: 'I’m gonna be able to get any sleep tonight'

Would you answer the door past midnight?

When do you live by yourself? It's normal to be scared of things that happen at night. That's why I enjoy living with an animal because then you're never truly alone. You feel like you have a buddy on your side when things get a little spooky at night. And who isn't a little afraid of the things that go on when you're sleeping? There is so much unknown that happens in the night, and everything feels a little more heightened when you're not asleep, and you know you should be. That's what happened in the situation where a tenant of an apartment had a weird experience with someone who was trying to enter her space late at night. When you are a renter and not a homeowner, or if you just live in a big city, you're always having to deal with other people in your space. Landlords have a tendency to want to enter as they please, and there's always a maintenance guy fixing something or somebody that needs to be buzzed in. This creates a lot of opportunity for things to go wrong. And it's hard not to have your defenses up when you're trying to protect yourself in your own space. It's not a good disposition to be suspicious of everything that comes your way, but sometimes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up even when you don't mean them too.

  • "Maintenance" worker came in my apartment at midnight. Should I be concerned?

    This happened less than an hour ago. I live in an apartment complex with 2 roommates (none of whom were home during this.)

  • At about 11:30 PM I hear knocking on the (locked) front door and a guy claiming to be maintenance. I (obviously) don't open the door cus it's d in near midnight. I tiptoe to the front door though and look through the peephole and catch a glimpse of someone leaving with maybe a vacuum or something in their hand? I go back to my room and lock my door.

  • Less than 10 minutes later he comes back and knocks again saying he's maintenance, and this time I hear him enter the apartment. He's in the common area for less than 5 minutes then I hear him leave. I was in my room, silent and terrified the whole time. After a few minutes, I walk out and it's clear.

  • I'm still so scared and perplexed by this. There was no emergency or anything, all he said was "maintenance" when he was knocking and "maintenance entering" when he came in. He was inside for less than 5 minutes. Coupled with the fact that it's literally almost MIDNIGHT it's got me suspicious and scared.

I was thinking maybe he was doing a job in my apartment earlier today and forgot something so he came back to get it? But that doesn't justify coming here at midnight, and I didn't notice any stray objects around the common area earlier that day when I came home. Any advice??

    SnooFlake Contact your landlord or property management in the morning, first thing. You need to find out whether this guy even works for them, and if so, you need to find out WHO THE F sent him into an occupied unit at midnight.

  • have been a maintenance emergency that was not from your unit, it could have impacted your unit. Given that they had a vacuum with them, it would suggest there was a bigger issue they were trying to attend to and needed to check the condition of your apartment.
